Providing informal practical help and support to the residents of Whittington and Fisherwick.
The primary beneficiary groups are the vulnerable elderly; those living alone, often socially isolated; with mobility and health issues/disabilities. The volunteers benefit themselves as well as the community they serve, sharing their skills and knowledge but learning too.
The programme of volunteer support currently includes:
• Provision of essential transport for medical appointments, and social activities. Journeys are free within the village and ‘at cost’ further afield.
• Accompanying clients for medical appointments in absence of family member
• Home visits/befriending
• Social events to combat social isolation / encourage home friendship groups
• Shopping/prescription collection
• Home/ garden practical jobs
• Assistance with letter writing, form filling, computer/communication use
• Information/signposting
Contact for assistance is easy through one local telephone number answered by Duty Officers who contact volunteers to provide the appropriate support. A sophisticated database is kept together with a secure record of clients’ specific needs.
