Aims & Activities
A very friendly bowls club, suitable for all ages and abilities. Bowling has been an English sport for hundreds of years. There are two forms of outdoor bowling - crown green and rink bowling, the latter being played in lanes up and down the green, whilst the crown green player can use the whole of the green. The oldest club in the world is thought to be the Southampton Old Green Bowling Club which was first organised in 1299 and is still an active club today. The oldest bowling green in Lichfield is the one based on the Bowling Green/Clock Island, believed to have been started by monks living in the Friary and thought to be the second oldest green in England. The Lichfield Crown Green Bowling Club has long established roots in the city, apparently being formed in the 1840s and being known as the Swan Bowling Club as long ago as 1922. Membership included many prominent Lichfield businessmen. The Swan bowling green was positioned in Bird Street adjacent to the Swan Hotel and part of that green is still in existence.
